Sweet-Bittersweet-Not Sweet
Fat Hen Grocery is Sweet
The restaurant is located on St. Charles Avenue and really charms you from the very beginning. It has beautiful frosted windows, an adorable hen with over-sized Mardi Gras beads strewn around her and a mix of cute potted plants that line the window sills & front of the restaurant. When you walk inside, there is a long wall mural that is divided into pork, hen, beef and lamb parts. Booths, wooden chairs, white table cloth draped tables and ceiling fans makeup the decor. I really enjoyed the artwork on the posts and painting of legendary jazz musician Louis Armstrong. Joyful New Orleans jazz music plays in the background and truly makes for a happy time.
I was impressed with their freshly squeezed orange juice. You literally saw a lady squeezing bright beautiful oranges behind the counter. Sure, many restaurants offer freshly squeezed juice. However, do they offer it in a cute mason jar with umbrella? For me, not only should the food be good but also presented accordingly. I thought the umbrella and mason jar was a very nice touch. I also decided to try their parfait, which is a greek style organic yogurt, layered with granola, strawberries and blueberries (seasonal fruit). The parfait could be a meal in itself. It's that rich and filling. I only ate a portion of mine, because I had to leave room for what was next.
What was next, was The Fat Hen's 'Berry Happy' Belgian Waffle. It has the perfect name, because it filled me up and I was BERRY HAPPY! They give you fresh butter, jam and WARM syrup. Another nice touch! My waffle was tender, the fruit was fresh & tasty, and the powdered sugar was the perfect topping. I'm very finicky about syrup, but their syrup had a wonderful taste to it. Did I mention it was WARM? That just elevates it to an entirely different level.
The person I was with ordered their Fat Hen Omelet. That particular omelet had shanemade ham, applewood bacon, cheddar, onion and mushrooms. A side order of potatoes was also ordered. I did have a chance to taste it and it was good. The potatoes also had a nice taste. The presentation for this dish was not nearly as glamorous as mine, but it tasted good. The freshly baked biscuit was yummy delicious! Is it the best omelet I've ever had? No! It didn't blow me away, but it was good.
My Final Thoughts: I had a really nice experience at The Fat Hen Grocery. I would definitely visit it again. I would like to give a huge shout-out to our waiter Walter. He was attentive, timed all of our dishes perfectly, made wonderful suggestions and really made us feel at home.
I can only think of two negatives for The Fat Hen Grill. One, is that it is pricey. It's nice, but to pay $45 + gratuity for just two people may definitely be too much for some just for breakfast. Two, we purchased two of their homemade chocolate chip cookies. Well, The Fat Hen Grill is a BBQ place and that BBQ scent worked it's way into the cookies. They definitely had a distinct smoke taste! HaHaHa So I would ask management to keep the cookies separate from the BBQ. Other than those two things, it was great! I plan on reviewing it again for it's BBQ and sides.
Mmm, the food looks great and I love freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast! The images on the walls made me smile, always good to know the anatomy of a chicken and a pig ;-) I think you're right though, $45 for breakfast alone is a little bit pricey, on the other hand, if it's a treat, heck, why not ;-) Have a lovely start to the week xo

Noooooo... How could you tempted me with such a delicious first pic of the waffle and strawberries??? Oh my, seeing somebody squeeze your orange juice is such a rare sight now. Often I order "fresh orange juice" only to see the staff pouring my juice from a carton.
ReplyDeleteThe Fat Hen Grocery & Grill sounds like where I would love to go for brunch too.
I loved the "jar of juice" - and your waffle just makes my mouth water. You should hold a waffle give away ;)

KIm, you always find the cutest places to write about, but then living in New Orleans I guess there's so many! That belgium waffle looks delicious. I think the price for what you got was not bad--but prices here where I live are pretty high, so I'm probably biased. Sounds like you had a good weekend!

It does look really good but 45 bucks is way too much for breakfast. I think I like to spend less than 30 for two people, generally.
