Whenever someone says they're creating a part TWO to something, I get nervous for them. As we all know, sequels usually fall short to the original. There are exceptions however. For example, Hollywood can come out with as many Fast & Furious movies as they want because all the guys look so damn good in the movie! However, I digress. Let's talk about Dior. Dior came out with Secret Garden 2 last week. I enjoyed seeing beautiful gowns & handbags in a lush enchanted forest. Ooh la la, the 'CD' pearl opera styled glasses (did you catch those? if not, they're pictured last below). Yawn...nice swings Dior, chandelier, chaise lounger and tulle around the eyes of the models. But for me, that's where the enchantment stopped. HaHaHa Secret Garden 2 was nice, but it just didn't come together for me like the first one. It seemed thrown together. The ingredients were there, but somebody just didn't cook it right. LOL With a powerhouse like Dior, one expects MORE! Anyone can put together a picnic setting, throw in a cute dog and take pictures by a tree. Us bloggers do that! C'mon Dior! Step up your game! Below are pics and video from Secret Garden 2. I also included the video to Secret Garden for comparison. What are your thoughts? Maybe I'm too harsh. In all fairness, I have written NICE things about other Dior productions (Here and Here).
HA, Kim you are so funny. I am such a Dior fan, but I may have to agree with you on this one, however I did love Dior's powersuits, perhaps they took a brief yawn on the styling judging by the (long version)video! lol You're right about us bloggers too! :-)
ReplyDeleteHmm I see your point - 2 seems darker somehow, maybe they were going for edgy but it just seems a bit more dull...
ReplyDeleteHmmm...I have to agree. I do like the one with the tree house, but they are a little boring and stiff really. I would have liked to see more movement and flow. They seem rigid and not very in tune with where they're at. The place is stunning and dreamy and flows, they don't, so they stick out like sore thumbs. Sometimes opposites don't work. I preferred the first one!! We should re-do this for them, they should hire us, haha! That would be too awesome!! Have a sweet day doll :)
ReplyDeleteI went through your article it seems really interesting to read and I really love it.
ReplyDeleteWow I love this editorial :)
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful and sort of magical !
I really like this :)
Oh and Kim, I have 2 new posts and would love to know your opinion :)

Dior did a beautiful job. Sequels aren't so bad after all (lol). But yes, I get nervous too. However, Terminator 2 was one of my favorite movies, and it was a sequel. I'm very much looking forward to the second Avatar.
ReplyDeleteHmmm... I'm torn. On the one hand I want to love this, mainly because I recognise the parts of the Grand Trianon where the first two shots were taken and I always love seeing familiar locations elevated to magical worlds for a fashion editorial. But as soon as we leave the Trianon, the shoot loses me. There seems to be less magic and more moodiness to this version than the first one. But I suppose it's all in the eye of the beholder :)

Such lovely photos! I agree though, they are definitely darker and less appealing as the first one. Still beautiful in their own right though :)
ReplyDeleteAway From Blue
I have to agree the first one was way better .
ReplyDeleteMeghan Silva's Blog
Heehee...I do love both, the second as much as the first. but I do think it's not the most original when ads do a "sequel".
ReplyDeleteTotally agree! Sequels just aren't as good, are they? This one does seem to have an "erie" vibe to it. Have a fab day, Kim!!! T. http://tickledpinkwoman.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteSuch gorgeous shots!
ReplyDeletelol I love these photos so much, so classy and cultural!!
ReplyDeleteHaha, I'm cracking up at your comment that bloggers take photos by trees! I agree that this is kinda ho-hum in comparison.

Some of the indoor shots are really gorgeous! I'm not as enthralled by the forest shots. But I still wouldn't sneeze if a lady bag or two fell in my lap! ;)

Ahah Kim, you are so right! It was the same thing I also thought about it! I prefered the first one much more! Though is nice also the second but not as much as to stare at it for hours as happened for the first last year:) Kisses dear! xo
ReplyDeleteHA! You crack me up, girl! So true though. I would not have known that these were Dior until I read your post!

I am having such a hard time seeing your posts AND posting via Bloglovin...
ReplyDeletei could not even see the video... :(
Haha! You are *so* right about Fast & Furious! That's why I will be going to the next one ;).
ReplyDeleteAnd The Secret Garden 2 is nice, but bloggers could easily do something similar. So I agree with you that someone like Dior should just blow us away.
<3
Hi Kim, I have recently lost my faith in Dior, I have to sadly admit it, and this photoshoot will probably add another reason to that. The location, of course is beautiful but the models seem so out of place, more robotic than romantic.
ReplyDeleteSweetie you not too harsh, you are well on point.
ReplyDeleteHi Kim, I love that you honestly review things, whether beauty products or campaigns. This one, is beautiful but such a almost verbatim copy of that famous Grace Coddington spread for Vogue with Galiano, etc.

I suddenly want to put on a dress and go running down a checkered ballroom...haha it looks like so much fun!
ReplyDeleteTrendy Teal
I can agree to some extent. It is maybe not THAT original in a way that you'd call it a picnic. But I cannot help but sensing some alienating vibes coming out of this picture. It's more of an artsy Alice in Wonderland vibe than a mere picnic, no?
ReplyDeleteWhat's for sure is that you're a very funny woman who has something valuable to say. And that's why I like reading your blog :-)
Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a note. It means a lot!

Love the pictures!
ReplyDeleteHmm, I see what you mean about 'Secret Garden 2' a little "thrown together". It's definitely not as grand as the first one (and really has nothing to do with Versailles), but the second one is much fore fanciful, which makes it more "exciting" than the first one. Imo, both have pros and cons.
ReplyDeleteYou are the absolute best. great post, KIm. I am loving and steeling: The ingredients were there, but somebody just didn't cook it right.
ReplyDeleteMuch love Miss Paps.

Just enjoying catching up on your posts after a long weekend away. I do agree that sequels are always a little tricky especially if Part One is such a success. However, I love the setting in the first two photos.

I love love love it and you know me. That outdoor scene makes me want to attend a chic outdoor tea party.
ReplyDeleteAfter looking at your other Dior posts (Christmas and Secret Garden 1) I have to agree with you. This one's not as special nor spectacular. Oh well. I bet their next one will knock your socks off!
ReplyDeleteHey Kim, I just happened to read your comment. Thanks! I made a mistake. Glossybox doesn't deliver to CANADA but they're still around. Yeah, it's weird because they have tons of Canadian subscribers. Thanks for the comment so I can revise my post. Haha. Btw, I like the Dior clothes but the setting is way too boring.

I love the video part but not the pictures so much. I think the background clashes with the outfits and they don't go well together. Not bad though but the first one is definitely better. :)

Kim you have such a great way with words and I totally agree with your analysis. The first one was so much better. I mean this one was pretty but I found it rather boring overall.
ReplyDeleteRowena @ rolala loves
haha, though I do kind of agree. George from Fashion Police had kind of mentioned the same thing about it seeming to be thrown together without a lot of unity.

I was uber excited when I saw the clip last week about a part 2, (the more Dior the better right?) however this did not do it justice. The original secret garden was so perfectly made. Maybe they should stop right where they are and leave well enough alone. LOL
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend Kim! Thanks for the discussion.

I admire Dior too. The setting at Versailles Palace was spectacular. My favourite Palace there is the Trianon. The clothes and bags are fabulous. I would like one of each please,
ReplyDeleteDior has been pretty quiet and subtle lately. I still like this brand a lot though but yea, I do agree that they should do something about it soon. Else they'll be left way behind.
