Breast Cancer Awareness Beauty Products 2013: Pick PINK Products Wisely

Hey Everybody! BEFORE you buy specially packaged "PINK" products for Breast Cancer Awareness month, please READ the fine print to see where your money is REALLY going. Some companies (i.e. La Mer below) use terms like "a portion of proceeds" will be donated, however they don't give a DEFINITE percentage or amount to be donated. Some companies use "this product is to raise awareness", and NO amount is actually donated. There are so many variations of these. So please be careful! Don't automatically think that because a product is packaged "pink" your money is contributing to breast cancer research. Pink products have exploded in vast numbers over the years, and regulating them has been slim. Below are PINK beauty products from companies that have FULLY DISCLOSED how much of YOUR MONEY is going to research (except for La Mer! I was shocked, but I already made the board) **For my International Readers, most of these products can be purchased at Selfridges.**

The BLACK DOT signifies how much will be DONATED to Breast Cancer Research. It is NOT the price!

  1. Oh my, I missed so many lovely blogposts while being away from blogging.

There are some really lovely products here, and even better it's for a good cause. And I don't think people are fully aware of that many companies only use pink products "to raise awareness" and quite frankly sell more products and not actually donate anything to breast cancer research. So thank you for this post!

I wish you a fabulous day darling!

  5. Brilliant post, from now on I will use this post as a reference when seeing what products to buy in aid of cancer awareness and for charity purpose because really there is so much that it gets confusing.

  6. Such a good post to have Kim!

There are certainly some companies who take advantage of the pink theme and don't actually donate anything. It's always best to donate directly if you can. But if you are buying anyway, good to know that there are some places that your money will be donated too! :)

  7. I also think it's important to read the list of ingredients to make sure that the brands don't use chemicals linked to cancer such as parabens. Otherwise no amount of pink packaging isn't going to cut it. x

  8. This is great, it's really important people stay informed about these things and know exactly where their money is going and how much. Companies sometimes just like to hop on the bandwagon and make a profit off of someone else's expense and it's sick really. This is serious stuff. Loved this post!! Happy Tuesday doll xx

  9. You made me think now, I took the thing for granted, believing that the a good amount of proceeds will be donated..but seems little disappointing. 10-20% is pretty few, at least those brands have clearly disclosed the percentage. La Mer is such a shame, considering how their products are expensive! xo

  11. Thanks for bringing this to the attention of your readers. This is one thing I always look for when purchasing something going to a charity. The smashbox donation is a pretty good one at $10 since the product is around $20 or so. Nice post!

  12. That's a great heads up regarding products with are geared for Breast Cancer Awareness, Kim. You're right...it's important to look at the fine print, as sometimes, there's actually no $$ being donated:O

  13. That is a great point to pay attention to the label and see how much is actually being donated. Personally I'd rather just donate to the cause and know that 100% of what I spent went to it.

  18. Cool! Thanks for the tidbits about the proceeds of these products. I've seen a lot of pink products like these and I'm definitely going to check twice where the money is really going to. Have a great day, Kim! Let's hope we can help prevent cancer someday.

  19. I'm surprised some of the percentages are so low. But I think it's still nice to buy products that support this cause in some way :)

  22. This was a big deal a few years ago, and I am so glad that you did a post on this. It makes me sad that a lot of companies are trying to profit off of such a good cause. Great post Kim!

  23. Great post, Kim! Thanks for the great info! I'm surprised La Mer is being so vague and possibly stingy- don't they just roll around in seaweed and money?!

  24. Yay for a bit of pink and helping an important cause at the same time! I really, really like what you have written. I believe that it is important to be aware of potential "pitfalls" as consumers. Thanks so much for doing the legwork so that we know where to really put our money :-) Have a lovely evening xo

  25. I think it's unfortunate that such a small portion of the sales from these items gets donated! I definitely do my research, especially when it comes to donating to organizations, because it's not often that you know exactly where your money is going to. Thanks so much for providing the info Kim! A lot of people don't know what portion of the proceeds actually goes into breast cancer research!

  31. That's such a good point and I always do look because I know it can be misleading, but then sometimes I think even if it's a small amount it can make a difference, but I'm a bit of a sucker like that :)

  34. Kim, thank you so much for pointing this out! I will also be doing a post on products benefiting BCA month and when I started researching I was shocked at how little some of the proceeds that are donated from certain products are so I tried to find ones that actually benefit more. Btw the Evelyn Lauder Dream Collection' Perfume Compact will donate 100% if it's purchased directly from the Estee Lauder site as opposed to Nordstrom or Macys. I will link your post when I put mine up.

  35. It is good that you are raising awareness for BCA and also on where consumers are putting their money to. Great research which would certainly benefit the people in your country. I wish my country had more of such BCA in the commercial sector too. It is great that big brand names are contributing to a great cause.

  36. I'm glad you show your support in this month of October for us ladies to be aware of breast cancer and the contribution of these products in the market. Everyone should be wise with their money and what's it used for.
