It's becoming VERY commercial! I came across Godiva's 2014 Limited Edition Lunar New Year Box of Chocolates w/Red Envelopes the other day. A 20 pc box costs $50 and a 32 pc box costs $120. That made me conduct a search to see if there were any OTHER products on the market for Chinese New Year ...Year of the Horse. I couldn't believe my eyes! Chinese New Year is definitely being commercialized (along with other holidays)! Why did I not think so??? My question to you, is how do you feel about the commercialization of holidays? I think some items are nice, but some can be cray cray. I tried to include some "nice" items on the board below.
On another note...If you would like to read your 2014 Chinese Horoscope (I'm a rat! LOL) click HERE and scroll down. I scheduled all my blog posts this week. Our weathermen are talking about SNOW today and the possibility electricity may go out! You guys have to realize, New Orleans hasn't had snow in YEARS! I had to haul ass to the grocery store and stock up, literally along with everyone else in New Orleans. They've shut down all our schools, roads, businesses and everything. Follow me on instagram, to see if it ever snows! It's probably going to be ONE snowflake! HaHaHa Oh well, at least I get to stay home. LOL >.< I'll keep you guys posted on Twitter and Instagram if anything happens. Have a great day!
It's bit a pity that all traditions have now more commercial interestings! It happens in all countries, all religions!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely day Kim

Wow, those chocolates are expensive! But I think Godiva is an expensive brand anyway. I like the USPS stamp, it's really beautiful. By the way, I'm the rat too :)
ReplyDeleteI have mixed feelings about the massive commercialization of traditional celebrations. Some things are nice but sometimes it can get simply too big - especially when it comes to religious celebrations.
Have a good day at home and keep us posted on the snow happening ... Maybe New Orleans will wake up covered in snow, hopefully without electric shortages or any other bad consequence!

I think sadly, every holiday and celebration has been commercialized. Either people don't care or they just buy any old thing without knowing areal history of it. Quite sad really, as the traditions are so rich with history. Take good care doll & be safe as you can. I hope it doesn't become bad for you!!! xx
ReplyDeletekind of a bummer to see chinese new year commercialized. i used to love the simplicity of the red envelopes. stay warm and safe, kim!
ReplyDeleteWell, I think people who celebrate CNY will appreciate the hype and extra goodies. :) It's not the same here, though. Maybe there will be something in London, but as far as shopping ideas go, I haven't seen anything too specific (but they already put Easter bunnies in shops - how crazy is that???!!!)
ReplyDeleteI am shocked to hear about the snow…. So odd… Hope you are keeping warm and cosy, Kim! x
some of these gifts seem rather misguided and not well researched based on all the superstition stuff i now know about :p
ReplyDeleteHow sad it is! Really bad that all traditions have now more commercial interesting! It happens everywhere. I love that China celebrates its own New Year! This fact really attract me always Kim <3 Kisses honey <3
ReplyDeleteHi Kim, I didnt know it was so commercialized but I think, sadly, is normal and common since now all the holidays are so! HAve to admit that always this kind of stuff fascinates me and makes me want to buy more (as in Xmas or Halloween). Btw, the YSL blush is sooo gorgeous!:) Regarding the horoscope Im a pig lol lol!:) Will check it out now. Stay warm, will find out later on instagram if you got some snow! xo
ReplyDeleteOooh, some of these would make such pretty gifts though...haha! :)
ReplyDeleteHope that you are safe and warm even if you do get lots of snow Kim! There has been lots of crazy weather around lately. Glad you managed to stock up in anticipation!
Away From Blue
oh my! it must be hard to have snow suddenly. (and every year it's not nice as well esp if extreme cold).Very nice items you've shown. Chinese new year is getting more popular. by the way, at my work we call Chinese New year a time of peace as we have a lot of tasks from Beijing.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately every special holiday is now commercialised in our days.
ReplyDeleteI like the DVF clutch.
I hate how the corporates have found a way to commercialize EVERY holiday! It's like a sickness, I reckon... :|
ReplyDeleteRelationships.College.Love
I know, it does seem that every holiday is commercialized these days. However, I do think the DVF clutch is adorable. Oh well, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em, right? :-)
ReplyDeleteI hope you survive that one snowflake. ;-)
(If you're interested, my current giveaway is for a delicate sterling silver arrow necklace from Chloe + Isabel.)
i can't think of any major holiday that is not commercial..the bengali new year comes around 15th april every year and the prices go high up in the local bazars..not as insane as $150 for chocolates but still .. the rupee dollar disparity should be kept in mind i guess..
ReplyDeleteI didn't know this particular holiday was also commercialized. But I guess it is no surprise, because almost all holidays are, especially Christmas!
ReplyDeleteOh so cool you may have the opportunity to experience snow since a long time ago! Have fun! :)

Wow, snow would be crazy! Stay warm!
ReplyDeleteToo bad those chocolates are so pricey - they're adorable!

I hope you guys don't get hit with too much snow, Kim. It's not fun:(
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah....it's so funny how CNY has become sooooo mainstream now. It's almost like Valentine's Day, what with all the merchandise and such. But the good thing is that it means more people are accepting the multiculturalism esp. here in North America, and that's always good:D
i think instead of getting more ang pows, my parents are burning a big hole in their pocket
ReplyDeleteI think it's the same with most traditions and special days now. They are all becoming more and more commercialised - with more special products each year. You will not be surprised to hear that I have my eye on those macarons and Godiva chocolates! Stay warm, Kim!

That is kinda sad that Chinese New Year has been commercialized as well. I'm curious if these products will actually sell. PS That is crazy that you may get snow! We're supposed to get yet another inch tonight, ugh.

I hope you'll be ok with all that snow coming. Can you believe it, we haven't seen any at all in London yet!
ReplyDeleteSo I guess "cray cray" means it's not good? I haven't come across that expression before ;-) No, I'm really not a fan of the commercialisation of absolutely everything and anything, especially when shops start stocking Xmas items in September!!! Your selection is rather nice though, love those trainers!!! Take care and enjoy the time inside ;-) xo
I can't believe you're getting snow. That's crazy talk.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with electricity. That can be scary stuff when it goes out.
I kinda love that Chinese New Year is getting more commercial. I love all the cute options.
Very interesting! I never noticed.

I also had no idea of how commercialized this holiday was. We only have recent Chinese immigrants to pour country so CNY isn't celebrated in the hugest scale. These could work out as great gifts for people celebrating though.
ReplyDeleteI live in Singapore and I can't begin to tell you how crazy commercialized CNY is! I was just at a mall earlier this evening and I couldn't turn around without running into a red and gold display. Even Starbucks is selling Year of The Horse merchandise. Tomorrow evening we will be in China town and something tells me it will be even crazier there!

Wow! I don't think it is nearly as bad as Christmas, but it is also kind of awesome. I think people like having something fun to look forward to during these cold, boring months. I hope you are okay this week!
ReplyDeletethat's really something unique.wow even laduree does it haha.I love the longchamp's bags.

I'm so excited to see this post, Kim! It's always nice to read about Asian/Chinese related issues on international blogs. Hinestly, I didn't know how commercialized CNY in New Orleans is. It's crazy here. People queue for 6 HOURS for BBQ pork (you can google "bak kwa").
ReplyDeleteI spent quite some time on the Feng Shui site. I like what I read. I'm Dog btw. Sheesh... now you know how old I am. lol...
WOnderful sharing!
all the holidays are commercial these days which is very sad!
ReplyDeleteIt's all about money isn't it? The world is really changing. Every single holiday is now commercialised, not bothered anyway..
ReplyDeleteGiven that USA is a melting pot, this trend probably will continue to grow but who really know what the true meanings of those days/traditions are except the fancy products. These products are fun to look at but I refrain from buying. I know that I am never big on buying stuff for Easter or Valentine's. Great post as always Kim.
ReplyDeleteStay warm my friend. It is not as cold today as they predicted it to be here but I got a paid day off....woohooo.
I'm not surprised the holiday has become so commercialized. It was bound to happen I suppose. As with so much of the holiday commercialization, it's up to the people themselves to remember what the holidays (any holiday) is about and to celebrate as they deem appropriate. I wish it wasn't so but, as times have changed, so do we.
ReplyDeleteRegardless, I do still look forward to Chinese New Year and the celebration that comes with it. =)

I definitely agree that every holiday is becoming over commercialised Kim,Enjoy the snow if it comes... we have awful cold and wet weather here!

I always wanted to test some macarons but somehow it never worked out… lovely post and I think there must be a reason for expensive chocolate. I mean better ingredients or something.

I heard that you guys are getting freezing rain and snow in NO right now. I sure hope you're inside safe and warm Kim! The weather this winter has just been crazy!
ReplyDeleteI don't know whether to be happy or sad that CNY has become commercialized like this but I guess it does make more people aware of the holiday. And that Clarisonic is quite pretty.

Seems like the holidays are becoming more and more commercialized--yet, I seem to keep buying. ;) I adore those Longchamp totes! Big hugs, T. http://tickledpinkwoman.blogspot.com
ReplyDeletei don't mind it so much, it seems to be the norm every year now and horses are my fave animal! the godiva chocolates are great - fingers crossed they saw your instagram comment hehe
ReplyDeletesteph / absolutely-fuzzy.com
Oh yeah, Chinese New Year is like Christmas in the States - totally commercialized! But I also love how it is an opportunity for many Asians from all over the world to come home and visit family and be together, and that'll outshine the Godiva chocolates or cards or anything.
ReplyDeleteYou know what it's true, CNY has quickly become a big marketable event. The only reason we have and celebrate it is because of my work. They always have tradition in celebrating it because of business.. I hope you stay warm and hopefully no snow. Seems like weather is very volatile everywhere. Take care. :)
ReplyDeleteI actually don't mind the commercialization of holidays :) It kinda helps remind me of whats happening :) on another note, it would be interesting to know if it did snow in New Orleans. Stay warm :)

wow I did not know it was this big. I thought that only is more bigger when I used to lived in the Philippines. When it gets so much commercialize, people tend to forget that the real meaning of the tradition.

I think every Holiday is becoming more and more commercial nowadays! Somehow it´s sad but on the other side I also love to look at the products :D For example the black Longchamp is a dream!
ReplyDeleteAlso thanks for sharing your Laptop experiences with me! If you still want to switch to Apple in a few weeks I could tell you how the change was for me as soon as I managed everything :)

We got some snow in NC, about 2-3 inches in my area which was enough to shut down schools and some businesses...but not mine. I am here at work, BOO!
ReplyDeleteI just want to make it home safely the roads are expected to get VERY icy.
Hope you enjoyed your 'snow' Day!
Everything is getting so commercial, but I do love those red nikes!
ReplyDeletewow! great finds even though I absolutely love godiva i ve been waiting to lay my hands on clarosonic and i cant wait to! happy chinese new year

Hello sweetie, I think that the commercialization of holidays adds to the festive atmosphere. The true spirit of a Holiday either is or isn't inside us nonchalant of all the ads :-)

Kim this was super informative. I took away how much more commercial Chinese New Year is through your collage. Thanks for sharing the link I was able to get my yearly prediction too, (I'm an Ox btw). Snow in NOLA? What in the world? I just saw we may get 2 more inches my way by tonight, just when it was what we had left over was starting to melt. Oy! I will keep an eye on your Instagram. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend pretty one. XO
