Why Short Prom Dresses Are Chic

For formal occasions like prom night, long gowns have been traditional for many years, but rising hemlines are a rising trend – and short dresses can be just as classy as longer gowns, and definitely as sexy, especially if your legs are among your finer assets! There is a dazzling variety of short and chic dresses out there to suit every girl and if you want to achieve a unique look, the shorter dress is a great way to put a new twist on some classic looks. Some good reasons why a little can go a long way, and some things to keep in mind when shopping for a short dress:

The Pros of Going Short

Style experts say there is a long list of good reasons for choosing a short dress,  some of them fun and some of them practical!

  • No tripping or overheating. With a short dress, comfort reigns and you won't need to worry about your heels getting caught up in your dress – and you'll be able to coolly strut your stuff on the dance floor all night without your dress getting in the way, or making you overheat.

  • Less dress, less to change. Alterations for prom dresses can be a major headache – and if you're unlucky, it can be one which can continue until just hours before the big night. With a shorter dress, any alterations that may be needed are likely to be a lot smaller and a lot easier.

  • Standing out from the crowd. While there are plenty of short formal dresses to be seen on catwalks and red carpets, chances are that on prom night, you'll be surrounded by girls in long gowns – and the odds of somebody turning up in the same dress are a lot lower when you go short!

  • It won't have to be just for prom night. While many prom dresses end up packed away in a box at the back of a closet forever after the big night, a short dress will have plenty more chances to be seen again at future parties. And if your budget is a major consideration, the price tags often get smaller along with the size of the dress.

  • Give your shoes a chance to shine. Your shoes are a big – and expensive – part of any prom ensemble, and with a shorter dress, you’ll be a lot more able to show off those perfect heels or pumps!

What Style of Short Gown Will Suit You?

While there may be less material to play with, there are just as many varieties of short prom dress out there as there are of longer gowns, and one can be found that will flatter any figure. Sleeveless dresses are ideal for the slim figure, while halter styles can be stunning on just about anybody – and will put your accessories on full display! One-shoulder dresses are among the most flattering around, and the princess or “A-line” dress style is a great way to introduce features like pearls and sequins. There are also plenty of lace-covered style that suit short dresses – and all kinds of figures – perfectly, and the classic cocktail short dress can be ideal for prom night, and plenty of other occasions besides.

Staying Short and Staying Classy

Short may be trendy but it can also be traditional – short dresses were turning heads as far back as the 1920s! Style experts say that with a shorter dress, you can still achieve a completely classic look if you keep things straightforward – don't go overboard with your hairstyle or make-up keep your shoes, jewelry, and other accessories simple, and make sure everything matches the dress!

  5. I wish we had the prom here - it's probably happening now, but not like in the US. We don't have a corsage, nor a date, usually you go with your girlfriends. I would also pick a short dress for sure, so much prettier. Happy weekend Kim xx

  13. I wore a short prom dress both years and I loved it! Although now, I wish I would have worn a short dress one year and a long one the next because you only get so many opportunities to wear a gown like that!

  17. I've noticed that shorter dresses are more popular now for prom or formal dances than when I was in school!! I'm super short to long dresses were always way too long for me.

  18. I think the short dresses look fab, here for prom they're being used too…
In my case, I prefer long ones - there are not many chances to get dressed up in long royal like gowns … so i make take advantage of those opportunities.

  21. I never experienced prom, I think it's an Amarican culture which is slowly adopted by other countries. My husband's nice is having her prom end of this month and she is super excited about it and shopping for a prom dress is such a huge deal for her. It's really cute to see how excited she is. I gave her some makeup for her prom night and she's over the moon about it. LOL!

  22. These dresses are so pretty! I didn't wear short dresses to any of the proms I attended, but I love short party dresses now. They're so much fun!

  23. I always regret not going to prom for the experience and being able to dress up like this, that dress next to number 3 is beautiful! I agree on all the pros a short dress can have, I feel like a long dress would just be a burden by the end of the day with it dragging on the floor everywhere :x

  25. It's funny how customs and trends change. When I had my formal or any kind of event requiring a gown it was always considered such a faux-pas to go super short. Angled hems and thigh high splits were always acceptable though and a way of preventing trip ups.

  28. I've always like short dresses. The only time I wore long dresses were my wedding evening gown and I think just 1 more maxi dress. Even when I attend weddings, I would usually wear short dresses. Perhaps I should try to embrace long dresses too.

  29. As I was reading this I had to smile, as a few weeks ago I attended a black tie event in a full length dress and my heel caught in the hem a couple of times. I was so relieved not to have fallen over!! I agree too that it's a shame that shoes are hidden. Short dresses are certainly easier to wear and can be worn more often but the long ones do feel glamorous.
Great post! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
