My Weekend Getaway at Beau Rivage

This weekend I went to Beau Rivage (Biloxi, Mississippi) to see Chaka Khan (Friday). Unbeknownst to me, she would also perform at the Hyatt in New Orleans Saturday night for the United Negro College Fund ($500 a ticket). I promised myself (after Michael Jackson died) to never miss or skip a concert again, in which I was genuinely interested in seeing an artist (you should definitely do the same, so you have no regrets). Chaka Khan is in my mother's age group (Rufus 70's), but the FIRST TIME I heard Chaka (I didn't see her) was in a low-budget movie called Breakin' (the movie promoted diversity, equality, not to judge a book (people) by it's cover and a plethora of other social issues BUT IN A FUN WAY via dancing). I was enamored with the character Ozone (who went on to teach dance in Asia & California), but equally enamored with a song called "Ain't Nobody". I asked my mom, who was that singing. She said Chaka Khan. Well during the 80's Chaka Khan was re-inventing herself! "Ain't Nobody" was a hit and another song "I Feel For You" was also a big hit. So it was exciting to FINALLY see and hear her in concert! She is now 62 and sings flawlessly (a true artist). I read her book (Chaka Through The Fire), and it is absolutely heartbreaking the abuse she endured by family & men and what she subjected herself to. She's also a diabetic and has undergone many lifestyle changes. Her story is astonishing and she's a woman to be admired.  I'm happy to say I've also seen Lionel Richie and Tina Turner in concert. They were both amazing to see. The last time I was at Beau Rivage (sister casino to The Bellagio in Las Vegas) on the Biloxi Mississippi Gulf Coast was in 2014 (here) for Christmas. I try to go when I can, because I want to support the gulf coast as much as possible. Biloxi was devastated by Hurricane Katrina (2005) and is still trying to rebuild. Before 2005, Biloxi looked like a second Vegas strip! Gorgeous homes and rows upon rows of casinos. That's no longer, but I'm happy to see the larger casinos still there and businesses starting to rebuild again. I had a really good time and took some videos of Beau Rivage. I tried to concentrate on areas I hadn't shown you before. Enjoy. They also had some really pretty Easter decorations, but I'll save them closer to the holiday. I wore my Chanel Rouge Noir Holiday (2015) makeup to the concert. I'll feature the collection on my blog this week. It's also funny to see how popular Converse were in the 80's (video) and to now see them popular again >.<

  3. I LOVE Chaka Khan! How awesome that you were able to finally see her in concert, I know she must have been really amazing! I also love Lionel Richie and Tina Turner. Man, these are some incredible artists and make today's "musicians" seem anything but. I know that there is some talent in the industry now, but nowhere near back in the day. Everything these days is mechanically altered. This was such a refreshing post, thanks so much for sharing. Now, excuse me while I jam out to Ain't Nobody, haha! Have an amazing week ahead, beauty!

  6. Sounds like you had a lovely time Kim!

I agree with going to see bands when you can! I'm lucky enough to have seen most of the bands I love live at least once, and although I was pregnant and really not feeling up to it, I managed to go to a farewell concert for a band I've loved since I was in uni! We've had some memorable times at their concerts (one notable one being when we had to rush my sister to hospital as a crowd surfer kicked her in the head and nearly knocked her out) Luckily she was okay, and the ER doctor noticed the band tees we'd bought and chatted with us about the little bit of the concert we'd managed to see. It's a great experience to see people performing live.

  10. It sounds like you had a great weekend away, Kim - I loved seeing all of your videos from Chaka's concert on Snapchat. There are very few artists who I am really excited to see in concert but seeing Bruce Springsteen in 2013 was definitely a lifetime highlight for me, such an amazing performer and I'm glad to be able to say I've been him in person.

  11. Shaka Khan is definitely an amazing artist, and I know the movie but have yet to watch it entirely. Now I want to find it, and watch it. So good that you support the city that was hit hard by Katrina, it still makes me sad when I think about what happened to everyone affected by it. Loved the video!

  14. Ah, I can only imagine how fantastic the atmosphere was at the concert! (or do they say show these days? :D) I love love love her music, though, admittedly, I knew the name and songs separately for a very long time. It was only a couple of years ago when I finally put the two together. :D I also think that 1970s were the best time for music or, at least, one of the top three. x

  15. Chaka definitely brought the house down, Kim! I love your outfit a lot. What a beautiful place! And all the food! I am glad you had a chance to go. Being able to go to concerts and enjoy life is a beautiful thing. I have only been to two R-Kelly concerts. The last one was THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS with Jay-Z. They are such geniuses in their own ways. Thanks for sharing your weekend getaway with us, Kim!

  16. Chaka Khan must have been a blast to see live! I wish she made it further on Dancing with the Stars. I love seeing older woman improve and show they still got it! The Breakin' clip looks quite entertaining. I love a great cheesy 80s flick. That fashions remind me of my childhood! It breaks my heart that over 10 years later some locations have not been able to completely rebuild after Katrina.

  17. Ohh, I can only imagine how amazing is it to see her performing live! Ain't Nobody is a song that never fails to get me in the groove, it's so upbeat. I have yet to attend any concerts, hubby wanted to purchase Adele's concert tickets for us in July (or was it June...?) but it was sold out within 10 minutes. *sob!*

ps: I couldn't play your video, Kim...getting error message. :-(

  21. I am glad that you didn't skip the concert Kim. I entirely agree with you, never skip a concert, my brother and I had tickets to the MJ show but could not go obviously after his passing. I went to see Stevie Wonder and that was one of the best concerts I've ever seen up close too. Chaka Khan is such a music icon as well. This sounds like it was a splendid getaway. I would love to see Lionel Richie! The video snippet made my day. <3

  23. Sounds like a fun weekend Kim! It's always nice to get away. Even if concert tickets are expensive, I think there's no price on seeing one of your favorite artist preform! There's something special about it.

  27. The performance sounds wonderful, and her story is inspiring!
I've seen a ton of ads for Beau Rivage on our drive down to Pensacola. It sounds like a nice place to stay. I told my husband that we need to stop there sometimes because it's on the way!
