The Balm usually has a 1/2 off (all products), one day sale (for only a couple of hours) ONCE A YEAR! It's usually in April or May. I would subscribe to their social media accounts to stay tuned in for the sale or you're definitely sure to miss it. I always try and take advantage of the sale, because their products can be HIT or MISS. I think beauty enthusiasts would agree, their
Mary Lou, Betty Lou and Cindy Lou Highlighters are awesome. But on the flip-side,
How Bout' Them Apples sucked (except for the packaging). LOL The Balm, just like Too Faced (who has now been bought out by Estee Lauder) knocks it out the park when it comes to cute packaging! I purchased
The Balm's Meet Matt(e) Trimony during their sale for 1/2 price (it sells for $42 regularly). And honestly (after swatching it), it should be sold for 1/2 price! Is it a bad palette? NO. Is it an awesome palette? NO. I liked 7 of the 9 shades. The two I had problems with, were Matt Lin & Matt Thomas which where were VERY CHALKY! The other shades turned out NICE. They were highly pigmented (for mattes) and applied well (a little powdery). When you look at
Smashbox's Lightening Theory Palette (which is now only $45 at Sephora),
Master Palette By Mario ($45),
Too Faced Merry Macaron Palette ($39),
Too Faced Christmas In New York Grande Hotel Cafe ($49) or even
Tarte's Young Wild & Free Palette ($28) you DEFINITELY GET MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK by purchasing one of those (in comparison to this one)! Of course the majority of these came out AFTER this one (except for the Tarte one), so you didn't have those options the beginning of this year. I just want to say, don't be so quick to buy something. If there are trending colors for the year, trust me ALL the brands will make their own version. For me, this is a nice palette, but I have an issue with the price. Nine shadows for $42? You're clearly paying more for the packaging. The companies above give you a lot more shadows etc PLUS cute packaging for a better price.
Sweet-Bittersweet-NotSweet
supersweet(run & buy it) sweet(really good,buy it) bittersweet(ok, issues)not sweet(not good,don't buy this stuff)
The Balm's Meet Matt(e) Trimony Matte Eye Shadow Palette is Bittersweet
wow the eyeshadow looks so pigmented, I love the Balm too cause the packaging always looks cute and I couldnt resist it and buy their Lipstick!
ReplyDeleteYeesh, $42 for just 9 shades?? HECK NO!!
ReplyDeleteIf only it was cheaper. They should seriously reconsider the price for it...sigh.

I think most palettes are in danger of being 'bittersweet' as it's SO hard to find one that features 100% gorgeous, high quality shades! Ughhhh. I'm pretty surprised by the price, though from your swatches I could see a couple of the shades looking really, really good on you Kim! :)

Oh such a shame the products weren't all perfect, for such a high price! It must be tricky if you see something you like, not knowing if it will sell out and you should buy now or if it will be really popular and you'll have more options later!
ReplyDeleteHope you're having an awesome week :)

You know, I'm not even sure I've tried anything from The Balm before. I do like the packaging of this palette, and from the pic, the shades do look quite good, but too bad about those two chalky shades. And yikes! $42US for that?!?!? The price is no bueno for me, Kim! :D
ReplyDeleteYou're so right about trending makeup shades Kim! I f you hold out, you favorite brand will probably come out with some version with them. The packaging for this palette is so fun but bummer that two of them were chalky. For $42 all of them should be winners.
ReplyDeleteChalky is yucky! The packaging is really cute though.
ReplyDeleteThe moment you mentioned "chalky" I just felt sorry for all the people in marketing. I mean they put this great effort in packaging and coming up with a creative concept and the names... and then the product does not deliver. Bummer.
ReplyDeleteThe Balm's marketing turns me off their products every time - I just find the packaging to be so cheesy, I would never want to look into my make-up bag and see a palette with a cartoon man on the front. Of course that's completely a personal preference, but since the products also don't always measure up on the quality front, I'm staying away.

I got a few stuff from their most recent 50% off sale (mar lou manizer for giveaway because I already have, their eye primer, and their liquid lipsticks which I love) and I was tempted to get this. I kind of thought it would just be ok which I see is how you feel about it! But of course their packaging is always fun!

I love the Matt Kumar shade it's so pretty!

I totally agree with you! I have the original Meet Matt(e) and never ever use it beside the time I reviewed it. Def not worth the price to me either.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for an honest review as always, Kim! I have always avoided theBalm as I strongly feel that their products are way overpriced for what they are. They are not high end, at least not in my eyes so no way I'll ever pay full price for them.
ReplyDeleteShireen | Reflection of Sanity
This looks like a pretty palette! Thanks for your honesty that it isn't worth the full price. This happened to me with the Balm Nude Tude palette. I bought it on sale in hautelook and was so excited and then rarely uses it. It was just okay to me, and I didn't think it would have been worth the full price either
ReplyDeleteAmazing colours! :D

I agree, The Balm always gets it right when it comes to their packaging; I love their whole vintage concept an this one is too cute, I love the name of the palette and shadows! I also agree that it is a bit pricey for a palette consisting of of only 9 shadows, two of which were chalky. Nonetheless, the colors are indeed lovely! Thanks so much for sharing, beautiful, and I hope you're having a wonderful week so far!

Oh yes, The Balm packages are beyond cute, I truly love their pin up style <3 I'm glad you got this palette by half the prices because it does kinda sound a bit pricey. From what I can see, my favorites would be Matt Kumar and Matt Lopez. I was gonna say Matt Thomas too but well, too bad it's very chalky.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your detailed review, dear!

I have a few colors from this palette as separates and I love the quality of those. I didn't know that the balm has 50% off sale - thanks for letting me know!

I love the look of the pigmentation!! Deffo need to invest in this palette xx

Wow - that's an expensive palette. Although the packaging and the shadows look very pigmented, sometimes that's not all that matters. How it wears is super important.
ReplyDeleteI love theBalm's gorgeous packaging - but do find that most their products are quite pricey.

excellent palette, love these colors
ReplyDeleteI posted a new review, I'd love to know your opinion
happy day, kiss

Those colors are perfection! There is so much that your can do with a palette like that! xo
ReplyDeleteThanks for your honest review, I do feel like lately all the palettes being produce are all the same. Is the industry running out of colors?! Dum dum duuum. ♡

I love the balm's sales! They also go on sale at Kohl's and Hautelook from time to time. This palette is gorgeous, it looks even more beautiful in the swatches! I absolutely love the last two rows-- especially Matt Kumar and Matte Moskowitz. Bummer that the first row isn't as great :( And you're absolutely right! Brands are constantly coming out with new things, better to wait a little to find something you truly love!

Omg that packaging! Even if you said this was bittersweet, I'd still want to buy it for the packaging alone. I can't stop LOLing at it! Genius.

ReplyDeleteI like this palette. Thanks for sharing it.

Great review and I appreciate so much when someone has an honest opinion about a product. I haven't tried anything from The Balm before, I find their products to be extremely overpriced for what they offer but I always appreciate the creativity they put in their packaging! x

I didn't know that Estee Lauder bought theBalm! As you said their products can be hit or miss, I really like the lou manizer highlighters, however when I tried some of the eyeshadows, I wasn't really found of them. Also price wise, they shouldn't be as high as the high end products, as they usually have cardboard packaging which is also a miss. Some of these colours, dark ones, are pretty but I'm not sure about the light ones.
ReplyDeleteEla BellaWorld
The colours are really deep and matte. The packaging is so nice.
ReplyDeleteSuch a bummer that two of the shades are chalky. Cute packaging, btw!

Nice review! This look so highly pigmented
ReplyDeleteSTYLE VANITY
The Balm always have the best names don't know? I particularly like this one as my other half is actually a Matt! ;D It's a shame about the price, you're right that it definitely seems you're paying for the packaging!
ReplyDeleteMusings & More
This would be a nice palette to travel with. The shades swatch very good on your hand. I agree with you that the price is not worth the palette.
ReplyDeleteI am not gonna deny the fact that when I buy thebalm products, it's mostly for the packaging! I find that their products are cute and sure their quality is good, but comparing the prices, there are better qualities and much affordable brand out of the market.
ReplyDelete♡ http://kayxcake.blogspot.co.nz
I love the Balm so much!
ReplyDeletehttp://curlyjosephine.blogspot.ba/
You are the queen of eyeshadow palettes!!!! I'm not a huge fan of matte shadows right now, because even if they're not chalky one must be really good at applying them. I definitely agree that 42$ is too much for this palette! Much love my dear!!!
ReplyDeleteSweet potato, LOL. It look adorable on you Kim. I may snag me one too and just finish it off with some gloss if I need to. I'm a sucker for matte shadows, and was thinking why on earth didn't she make them more pigmented. Then I looked at your swatches and they're actually not that bad. Or did you already use Fix+ on your brush before swatching? Either way, I'm loving this palette. Really loving it.
ReplyDeletehttp://fashionablyidu.com/
I love The Balm...it's one of the first makeup brands that began my love of makeup. So I hold a special place in my heart for them. I've tried their shadows and really like them. But I agree...there really isn't a middle ground as far as sizing goes, they are either really small or too big. I usually only purchase when they are on Hautelook of when they do their big half off sale, like you mentioned. The colors are so pretty though...I love me some matte shadows!
