Whipped Cream: American Ballet Theatre
If you live in New York or plan on visiting soon, get tickets to see Whipped Cream (May 22 - July 1, 2017) performed by The American Ballet Theatre at The Metropolitan Opera. I found out about Whipped Cream over the weekend, and it literally made my heart skip a beat. It's about a boy that overindulges at a Viennese pastry shop and falls into a delirium. The boy dreams of an assortment of sweets that help him escape from his attending physician. Schlagobers (the Austrian word for Whipped Cream) was originally premiered at the Vienna State Opera in 1924. This latest version has brilliantly been re-imagined by choreographer Alexei Ratmansky and artist Mark Ryden. The set, costumes and artwork for Whipped Cream are the masterful & talented works of Mark Ryden. The score is by the late composer Richard Strauss. If you're in love or smitten (as I am) with the artwork of Whipped Cream, there is a Mark Ryden: The Art of Whipped Cream Exhibition at the Paul Kasmin Gallery from May 20th - July 21st, 2017). This exhibit will feature drawings, sketches and paintings created for the production of The American Ballet Theatre's Whipped Cream. Many are comparing Whipped Cream to The Nutcracker Suite, however Whipped Cream displays both a sweet & dark side. It looks dreamy!
This is one of those few ballets I have never seen performed and I would love to - you have me tempted to book a trip to New York, Kim!

That sounds weird and strange and right up my street. But I fear there is no trip to New York in my near future.

This ballet looks so beautiful and magical. It would be fantastic to see it.
ReplyDeleteThe premise of this ballet sounds like a fantasy come true and judging by these pics the production design certainly looks impressive. I'll have to check into tickets.
ReplyDeleteOh I would love this one! It reminds of The Nutcracker which I have seen a handful of times. Ballets to a dream are so enchanting! The set looks adorable and so fun. Maybe this one will air on PBS at some point so I can see it. :)
