Advances in Medical Treatment for Migraines

If you suffer with chronic headaches or migraines, keep in mind that there is help out there. The National Headache Institute has been around for many years to help people with these conditions. The Institute works with patients to help them in determining the source of their chronic headache or migraine. There are also tests that can be done that will help patients to better understand their body and mind. The National Headache Institute uses individualized diagnostics when helping a patient that suffers from chronic headaches and/or migraines.

When it comes to regenerative treatments for chronic headaches, there is no one who understands the complex nature of where chronic headaches and/or migraines start, than the National Headache Institute. They can do diagnostic testing that includes: an electroencephalogram (EEG), the autonomic nervous system test (ANS), the Videonystagmography test (VNG) also called the stress test, the echocardiogram test (ECG), the Transcranial Doppler test and the Extracranial Bilateral study. The National Headache Institute also offers allergy testing, which can cause chronic headaches and migraines as well. The National Headache Institute says that Botox can relieve certain chronic headaches and/or migraines.

Electroencephalogram (EEG)
This test is used to help detect brain activity. The EEG is used by physicians to see if there have been any seizures or if epilepsy is shown. This gives the physician a look into the brain waves for each patient, to see if this could be a root cause for the chronic headaches or migraines.

Autonomic Nervous System
The ANS is designed to monitor the autonomic body functions that include: blood pressure, blood flow, bowel movements, bladder control and sweating. These can lead to diarrhea, tachycardia, nausea and other symptoms that can leave the body unbalanced. This can often lead to chronic headaches and/or migraines.

Videonystagmography (VNG)
More commonly called the "stress test", the VNG is used to see if there is an inner ear imbalance causing the chronic headaches and/or migraines. This test is able to test one ear or both ears to determine symptoms, like dizziness surrounding your chronic or migraines.

Echocardiogram (ECG)
The ECG is used to diagnose the blood flow to the heart. It is done as an ultrasound and is used to determine if the blood flow to the heart is normal. This can cause heart problems along with chronic headaches and/or migraines.

Transcranial Doppler
This test is used to detect problems with blood flow issues in the cranium of the brain. When blood does not flow through the blood vessels correctly, the impact can lead to chronic headaches and/or migraines.

Extra Cranial Bilateral
This study is an extension of the Transcranial Doppler study and helps to go more in depth with cranial blood vessel flow studies.

The National Headache Institute also looks at patients with allergies to analyze a connection with chronic headaches and/or migraines. Allergens can produce pressure in a person’s sinus cavity, respiratory system and head. This also can lead to chronic headaches and/or migraines.

Interestingly enough, Botox is something that is being used to help with migraines. The procedure helps to slow down the activity of certain facial muscles, which can reduce chronic headaches and/or migraines. The Botox injection is used for those who have a severity of headaches and a large number of sequenced headaches each week.

It is good to have your primary care physician to examine any study that you are doing. It should be healthy for you the patient and work well towards your body’s needs.

  2. I had no idea there were so many forms of tests and/or treatments now for migraines! My mum suffered terrible ones for two decades, however she was prescribed injections that help to receive the pressure immediately - it's amazing how much medicine has come on in recent years! Hope you're having a lovely weekend Kim :)

  5. I get chronic headaches and migraines and I’d love to go to a headache insititue to see what causes them. My regular doctor is really no help, other than prescribing migraine meds! If I eat well, it makes a lot of difference though!
