This week has been amiss for me as far as blogging. I had a very good week (so many good things happened to me), but whenever I tried to do something for the blog ... things didn't turn out right. I was so frustrated. So I let it go. Next week is a new week, right! ;) I'll be catching up with your blogs this weekend. I have some sponsored posts tomorrow and this weekend. I watched some really good documentaries on Netflix about various shoe designers. To understand a product, you must understand the person. That's why I like to know a person's backstory. It explains a lot!
Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes For Lizards (2017)
His shoes are famous for so many things. The pilgrim buckle. The mule. Did you know he designed shoes for the movie Marie Antoinette? He designed the black heels Princess Diana wore with the well known "Revenge Dress" designed by Christina Stambolian (on a side note Princess Diana purchased a Valentino dress to wear that day, but a statement to the press was released by the Valentino house and she was put off. So she wore the Christina Stambolian dress instead). Manolo answers questions about why he could never live with anyone. He reveals why he likes lizards. He had a privileged childhood and life, but remains very humble. Rihanna, Naomi Campbell, Anna Wintour, Andre Leon Talley and many more make appearances in this documentary. If you think I've revealed too much, I haven't. There's a lot to learn from this documentary. I learned a lot.
Maddman: The Steve Madden Story (2017)
When this popped up on Netflix, I said to myself ... I've heard of Steve Madden ... I've seen his shoes... but I've never seen Steve Madden! LOL What does he look like? What was his life like? I first learned about him in the 90's. Do you remember his ads? I placed a few below. The girls in the ads looked like dolls. Their heads were big! They had super cool funky clothes on and the feet were made big to show off his shoes. I always thought they were cool. What made Steve popular was the 90's Grunge period and music artists! Getting back to why you didn't see him, he was connected with The Wolf on Wall Street (famously played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie). This documentary explores his downfalls & how he rose back up. He kept moving forward despite everything. It made him a MUCH better man and now he's helping others.
Christian Louboutin: In Louboutin's Shoes (2015)
I knew going into this documentary that Christian Louboutin had a no holds barred personality. He doesn't bite his tongue. It is what it is. He offers no apologies. If you can't afford his shoes ... too bad ... too sad :S If they're not comfortable ... that's not his problem :S He sees shoes as sexual. He makes shoes he wants to make and for nobody else. This documentary shows how his famous shoes are made and where he seeks inspiration. He has an impressive clientele. He talks about his childhood. He always felt different from the other members of his family. He found out, his biological father was Egyptian! This documentary also follows his daily life. It's an interesting watch. All of these documentaries can be found on Netflix.
Oh, I didn't know these were on netflix. I'll see if I can get them in Canada. I've never seen Steve Madden either lol. Google...here I come.

Glad you had a good week Kim, don't feel bad if you couldn't blog as much as you want, it's always there when you do get the time :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing these - I haven't watched any fashion documentaries on Netflix since 'The True Cost' so I like having some recommendations for similar ones to watch next!
Hope you're having a lovely day! It's Australia day today, so a public holiday which is nice, we can get some more family time in!
Away From The Blue Blog
I'm glad to hear you're having a good week despite things not going right with the blog Kim. Sometimes you just have to put yourself first anyway :) Thanks for sharing these! I always find it interesting to see how a designer's background influences their creative work.
ReplyDeleteThese all sound interesting!! I never knew there was designer documentaries! I’m happy you’re having a good week, Kim! Your blog will always be there waiting, with all of us!
ReplyDeleteSome weeks, things just don't work out the way we would want them to and that's okay - just letting it go is for the best. At least two of these documentaries aren't on Netflix in Canada, which is a shame. I'd love to see the Steve Madden one. I adored those old ads with the giant girls and seeing them again brought a big smile to my face this morning :)

What does Steve Madden look like hahaha!? Don't know if I'd watch that one but Manolo for sure. That looks like a great watch. BTW I too had one of those blogging weeks, I was sitting on a 95% completed post for 5 days straight. Just couldn't get my act together!

I have to watch these! I almost turned on the Manolo one the other night but watched something about animals instead since my husband was with me. :) Netflix is awesome. A little bit of everything there. Time to watch Breakfast at Tiffany's again for the 30th time!
