Farsali Unicorn Essence & Rose Gold Elixir Review

The brand Farsali has been on my beauty radar for some time. The owners of Farsali Skincare are Farah Dukhai (she's absolutely gorgeous; youtuber, makeup artist, hairdresser; she graduated with an honors diploma in the makeup industry and also earned a diploma from the Aveda Institute in cosmetology science.) and her husband Sal Ali (created the brand for her). He developed the skincare brand because of her frustrations with combination skin and acne flare ups (read here). Their demonstrations are always on Instagram. You see product dripping down a person's cheeks, and they are left with amazing skin & flawless makeup application. I had to try these products for myself. So, I purchased mini deluxe samples ($20 ea) of their Unicorn Essence and Rose Gold Elixir (full sizes are $54 ea) from Sephora.

Sweet-Bittersweet-NotSweet
supersweet(run & buy it) sweet(really good,buy it) bittersweet(ok, issues)not sweet(not good,don't buy this stuff)

This is the first time on A Very Sweet Blog that I've given dual ratings for a product.
The reason for it, is their dual purpose.

Farsali Unicorn Essence (Antioxidant Serum + Primer)
Bittersweet (skincare) / Not Sweet (primer)

USED AS SKINCARE - The first thing you notice about this essence is that it is very beautiful. It's a gorgeous purple & pink shade. Very befitting of its name (unicorn essence). It's also scented like fruity bubblegum. This essence contains radical fighting properties such as acai berry, goji berry, elderberry and blueberry. Besides protecting skin from free radical damage, it's suppose to help prepare skin for layering moisturizer and makeup application. This is an oil free formula. When you apply this essence, your skin will immediately soak it up. My dry skin slurped it up! LOL I've used this for weeks now and I don't see any differences in my skin. It also leaves very tiny sparkles, which I'm not a fan of when it comes to skincare. I've only tried one essence (IT Cosmetics Miracle Water), so I'm hardly an essence connoisseur. But when I tried the one from IT Cosmetics, my skin felt nourished, hydrated, and plumper. I didn't achieve any of that with this. It just absorbed quickly and that was it. Let me know what you experience when you apply essence!

USED AS A PRIMER - On Farsali's website, they state you can also use this as a makeup primer, eye shadow primer, and to enhance your highlight. You're suppose to pat 2-3 drops of this essence into your skin and then apply your makeup. I did and my foundation became so MATTE! I tried this with hydrating foundations such as Too Faced and Tarte Shape Tape Hydrating Foundation. It seemed to change the formula of my foundation. My foundation looked matte on my face, powdery and very dry. I did not like the look. I even tried using the essence and rose gold elixir together. Same result. Based on what I experienced, I can't recommend this product to my readers as a primer.

Farsali Rose Gold Elixir (radiating moisturizer)
Bittersweet (skincare) / Not Sweet (makeup application)

USED AS SKINCARE - This moisturizer is labeled as ideal for all skin types. I agree. The scent is definitely rose scented (the website says it's a citrus aroma ???). It's authentic. You guys know I'm not a fan of rose scented skincare, but I moved along. This oil is just slightly heavier than the Smashbox & NYX primer oil I tried, but it absorbs into the skin really fast. Using this product over several weeks, my skin felt soft but never fully nourished. This is suppose to be used as a daily moisturizer, to keep skin healthy & hydrated. The website states there are 24K flakes, but I didn't see any in the mini size :S The base of this elixir is rosehip seed oil. They said you can use this to moisturize your lips. This just sat atop my lips. It never fully absorbed.

USED WITH MAKEUP -  Farsali states you can add a couple of drops to your foundation or dot your foundation on your face and add drops to a beautyblender & work it in. I tried this BOTH ways and my results were just as above with the essence. MATTIFIED FOUNDATION! It's just not a pretty look on dry skin like myself. Maybe this will work for other skin types!?! I really wanted this to work, because Farah's skin is gorgeous. She has beautiful hair. The couple seems very authentic. I just couldn't get these to work for me.

  2. I had wondered if this brand was all hype. Thanks for the review Kim. If these didn't work for you then they probably won't work for me either since we have similar skintypes. It's a good thing you were able to get mini deluxe samples to try out.

  5. What a lovely story to behind this brand! I haven't heard of it before but I recently tried an 'essence' style product so I thought I'd have a read of this. Love the sound of the bubblegum scent! The packaging is gorgeous, I'm definitely going to investigate further.

  7. It's a shame that these didn't work for you as they look lovely - it's always great to try different products though. I love blogging and reading different blogs as you can come across so many brands and products which you wouldn't come across any other way.

Hope you're well and hope you're having a lovely week! :)

  8. I haven’t heard of this brand before! I’ve never tried any skin essences before either. That’s too bad these aren’t as promising as they sound Kim! I’d want to skin to feel nourished too. And so weird they made your foundation matte when used as a primer!

  9. I stay away from this brand because it's overhyped and raved about by social 'influencers' and the good reviews are all PR samples or at least those that I saw. A few ladies bought with their own money and have said it's nothing special and some even disliked the products. Thank you for the honest review, Kim.

  10. Ahh another brand I haven't heard about. It sucks that it didn't work out great for you, but at least you can tell us about it honestly and share your own experience, which makes it worth it I think.

  11. Unicorn & elixir - this sounds like something off of Harry Potter! I really appreciate your honest reviews Kim as it's so easy to be tempted by hyped products & I'd rather have your thoughts before forking out!

  12. Thank you for the honest reviews as always, Kim:) It's good you didn't get the full sizes off the bat....that's unfortunate these didn't live up to the hype. Not gonna lie...haven't heard of this brand before.
And yeah...an essence is supposed to make your skin feel hydrated!

  13. These products do look beautiful - but beautiful packaging doesn't guarantee a great product, sadly. It's a shame these didn't give you much in the way of results, but your review has saved a lot of us from purchases we didn't need to make :)

  15. I don't think that I would enjoy these. I am deff not a fan of sparkles anywhere on my face except for my eyelids. LOL

  16. This is such a pity, as the brand as a whole look so beautiful. I love that the owners have higher education qualifications and that they can use their knowledge to better their products. I have used korean essences and I love them by the way.

  17. It's a shame it didn't work well for your skin. I'd still be interested in seeing if their other products work since they have such great backgrounds.
