How to Prepare Your Home Before Going on Vacation

If you’re off on vacation, it’s only natural that you will want to leave and return to your home in the way you left it. Planning a trip away can be incredibly stressful, and with so much to do such as knowing what to pack and sorting out your itinerary, it can be easy to forget about organizing your home. To make sure your property is clean, safe, and secure, here are a few ways to prepare your home before going on vacation.

Thorough Cleaning
Before you jet off on your adventure, it’s important to give your home a thorough clean. The last thing you want is to get back home and know you’ve got a mountain of chores to do. With a whole load of clothes to wash, getting your home in order before you head off can make all the difference. Getting rid of dirt, scrubbing the toilets and sinks, and vacuuming around will mean that you can arrive home and relax after a long tiring day of travel.

Sort Out The Refrigerator
While you’re cleaning, you will need to have a look inside your refrigerator to check what needs to go in the trash. If you’re away for a couple of weeks, any leftover food can go nasty, giving off a bad smell which can linger around your home. What’s more, you may find some food that you can freeze, rather than go to waste. Try and use up as much food as you can before you depart, and give away any fruit to your family, friends, or neighbors.

Double-Check The Laundry
Once you’re packed and are ready to go, it’s all too easy to forget about the most obvious things. For example, the last load of laundry that you forgot to throw into the dryer. Before you go on vacation, make sure you check your washer, as you won’t want to arrive back with a full load of laundry that’s had a week or so to sit and get a damp smell. If you do forget, there are few things you can do if your clothes have a damp smell, but it is best to avoid this altogether.

Security Measures
Your home should be the one place on earth that you feel comfortable in. We all know how important it is to lock our doors and keep our windows shut to deter burglars. However, while you’re away, the worry and fear of intruders striking can cause panic and stress. To give you peace of mind, there are various security measures that you can take to ensure your home is protected. For example, checking out the best wireless home security systems can be a good place to start, adding an extra layer of protection to your property. You should also consider setting timers on your lights, so intruders think that you’re at home. If you have any friends or family nearby, why not hand them a key so they can check on your property from time to time?

Program Your Thermostat
To save energy while you’re away, setting your thermostat to an away mode will adjust the temperature setting when you’re not at home. What’s more, you will save money, too, meaning there are no nasty surprises when the monthly bill comes in.

Unplug Your Electronics
It’s important that you unplug any electronics around your property that don’t need to be on while you’re away. Not only will you reduce the cost of your energy bill, it will lower the risk of a fire breaking out in the home. Things like televisions, chargers, and routers can all be switched off. If anything needs to be left on, you should ask someone to check in on your property to ensure everything is running smoothly.

Going on vacation should be something to look forward to, but we can sometimes be distracted by worries. Having some time away from the daily stresses of life can be a great way to relax, unwind and have some much-needed me time. While you’re away, there are lots of things that you can do to ensure your home is safe and protected. Whether it be doing a thorough clean, taking out the trash, installing a wireless security system, or leaving a key with one of your nearest and dearest, taking any of the steps listed can make a big difference, ensuring you arrive back to your home how you left it.
