Not Sure If You Should Outsource Work? This Might Make You Change Your Mind

Small business owners can often feel like they are juggling lots of plated and are doing the jobs of multiple people. In the beginning, it might just about feel manageable, but there will be a point where they start dropping those plates and realize that they cannot do it all, or not adequately. Before it gets to that point, business owners should be looking very carefully at the tasks that they undertake, and see which ones they can outsource. By doing this, they are free to focus on the important job of building and growing the business.

Thanks to technology, outsourcing work has never been easier. You no longer have to pay someone to physically travel into the workplace and carry out the tasks - instead, you can employ someone to do it remotely, from just about anywhere in the world with an internet connection. It also allows you to find the very best people - for example, an SEO expert by Ignite Digital. Of course, this does cost money, but in the long term, it will enable you to be more productive and thus increase your profit margins.

Confused about what sort of tasks you might outsource? Here are some ideas:

  • Search engine optimization
  • Marketing
  • Content creation
  • Web design
  • Bookkeeping and accounts
  • Payroll
  • IT Support
  • Social Media

Do not fall into the all too tempting trap of outsourcing all the work that you don't want to do. While you need to enjoy the majority of the work that you do, as a business owner, there are always going to be elements of the job that you don't like but have to do. The whole point of outsourcing is to have someone do the tasks that you either do not have the skills to do - perhaps dealing with legal or financial issues, or managing your technology,  or the jobs that take you away from doing other, more important tasks, such as data input, phone calls, and appointment making.

In many cases, the people who undertake these tasks work on a freelance/contractor basis, so you do not need to pay them a fixed salary. This is beneficial to you as a business because you only have to pay them as and when you need them and are not responsible for things like sorting out their tax or paying them if they go on holiday or maternity leave. On the downside of this, there may be times that they are unavailable, and you may need to find someone else at very short notice.

It can be difficult to find the right person at first. The best place to start is within your network - ask fellow business owners in your industry if they can recommend anyone. Networking platforms such as Twitter and LinkedIn can also be useful for finding potential candidates. Many people now turn to websites such as People Per Hour, which allows people to upload their CVs and portfolios and pitch for jobs.

Outsourcing tasks gives you the chance to dedicate time and resources on the jobs that you need to do to help your business develop and grow. Try it and reap the rewards!
