First of all, congratulations! You have a very exciting time ahead of you in the next 9 months. Welcoming a baby into the world is one of the most incredible journeys to take and it’s something that you’ll certainly never forget.

Whether you’re having the baby via IVF (there are many clinics across the country who offers this – AFCC is a leader in the field for example), or you’ve fallen pregnant naturally, there are certain lifestyle changes you should make before the big day.

No matter if it’s your first, second or third baby, it’s important that you’re aware of what you need to do ahead of their arrival. Of course, once they are born they are a whole host of other changes you might have to make – such as cutting down the amount of trips you go on. But ahead of their arrival, the below changes might have to be taken into consideration:

Cut Out Caffeine, Cigarettes and Alcohol
When you realize that you’re pregnant, it’s a good idea to cut out the above. Detrimental to the health of your baby, it’s worth cutting out these harmful habits throughout your pregnancy.

You want to be on the safe side and lower the risk of them developing any issues throughout the birth and after, so these small lifestyle changes should be at the top of your priorities list.

Avoid Dangerous Situations
Whether it’s when you’re at work, in the city or another location, it’s important that you avoid any possible dangerous situations. For example, at work, try to sit down as often as possible and stay away from any damaging chemicals.

Once you’re past your third trimester, you should also try to stop driving – to lower the risk of any accidents occurring when you’re on the road.

Manage Your Stress Levels
Stress wreaks havoc on your body, mind and the development of your growing baby. So instead of letting stress control your life, try and find a way to reduce and manage it. Whether this is through yoga, massages, going on long walks or other activities, you will feel a lot more calm and at ease.

It’s important that you carry through this mantra after the birth as well, even if you’re thinking of indulging in a mommy makeover or something similar.

Switch Up Your Diet
To ensure that you’re gaining a healthy amount of weight throughout your pregnancy, it’s important that you make alterations to your diet. Giving your baby the best environment possible to grow in, foods that have a high nutritional value are a must. One way of doing this successfully, is by looking at foods that are:

  • High in Folate: such as spinach, asparagus, citrus and black beans.
  • Rich in iron: e.g chicken or steak.
  • High in vitamin C.
  • Eggs
  • Salmon
  • Greek yogurt
  • Fortified grains

There are so many different recipes out that are ideal for expecting moms. So it’s worth scouring the internet for some inspiration before cooking up a storm at home.

Just remember to eat smaller meals, 5-6 times a day and to avoid lunch meat and soft cheese. You should also drink a lot of water throughout your pregnancy, to ensure that you’re fully hydrated throughout the day.

Try Prenatal Vitamins
Prenatal vitamins are great for pregnant women. Containing essential nutrients, they help to create new blood cells and help with the development of the baby’s neural tube. When finding prenatal vitamins, ensure that they are high in folic acid and iron – as well as seeking the advice of your doctor.
