3 Home Security Tips to Keep You and Your Family Safe

The effects of the Coronavirus pandemic have changed everyone’s life in some way. Whether you’re still under a stay-at-home order and looking after the family or life is slowly starting to return to normal, it’s more important than ever to keep your home safe and secure.

If this virus has taught us anything, it’s the importance of staying safe in every way. If you’ve had to stay at home with your family for weeks or work from home, you’ve probably grown to appreciate your “four walls” more than ever before.

So, what can you do to keep your home, everything, and everyone in it safe? Let’s look at three home security tips you may not have thought of before.

1. Get Rid of Hiding Spots
When someone tries to break into your home or to steal something, they’ll usually do so under the cover of something. That’s why so many burglaries happen at night. Even in the dead of night, criminals will try to find hiding places around your house like dark corners, behind bushes, etc.

Your goal should be to eliminate those hiding places as much as possible. One of the easiest ways to do that is by installing more lighting around the exterior of your house. If a thief knows they will be in plain view no matter where they are, they’re less likely to stick around.

2. Keep Windows and Doors Locked
This might seem obvious, but so many people leave their doors and windows unlocked far too often. Windows are especially easy to forget. If it was a nice day and you had your window open to let in a breeze, did you remember to lock it once it was closed again? Ensuring everything in your house is locked and secure will make it much more difficult for a thief to get in.

You should also secure any belongings you have outside like bicycles, athletic equipment, or tools by placing them in a box or locker with a Mul T Lock padlock. The harder you make it for a thief to reach your things, the more likely they are to move on!

3. New Windows or Security Film
If you’re building a house or you’re due for a window upgrade, you might want to consider installing windows with shatter-proof grass. It’s very common for burglars to break into homes through the window, and it really doesn’t take a lot of force to break one.

If new windows won’t fit in your budget, the next best thing is to try a security film on the windows. It will also help to keep them from shattering. Because burglars try to move quickly and quietly, if they aren’t able to break a window fast, they might give up and move on. Security film is a much smaller investment that can yield similar results.

No one wants to think about their home being violated by a thief, especially now that it probably feels more like a sanctuary than ever. Keep these simple tips in mind to deter thieves from your house, and to keep everything and everyone in your home safe.
