How to Have a Holiday Themed Picnic for the Family

For those in warmer climates, the holidays are the perfect time to plan a picnic!

It may sound unconventional but consider the benefits. With limited indoor gatherings, 2020 has become the year of outdoor alternatives. If you want to spend time with your loved ones this year—without breaking any rules—what better way than with a picnic?

Read on for everything you need to know about planning a holiday-themed picnic for the whole family!

Choose Your Location

A picnic can happen anywhere, but some outdoor spots might provide a more pleasant atmosphere than others (did somebody say side-of-the-freeway picnic? AKA your eardrums’ worst nightmare—no, thank you!).

The best location for a holiday picnic will have the perfect balance of weather, scenery, and space. Consider the pros and cons of these popular outdoor destinations before making your final decision:

  • The beach – A beach picnic can be delightful, but only in the right conditions. Check the weather beforehand to ensure a windy December day won’t send your picnic basket flying into the ocean!
  • The park – Your local park is a great spot for a picnic, but hours may be strict. A daytime outing will work best for this location. With daylight savings time around the holidays, this may need to be even earlier than you may think. (Don’t you just hate how the sun sets at 3:00 p.m. these days?)
  • Your backyard – Sometimes, the best picnic spot is right in front of you—or behind you, depending on which way you’re facing. COVID restrictions can cause crowding in outdoor spaces, so you may want to host your holiday picnic in the privacy of your own backyard. This option also allows for more freedom when decorating. After all, what’s a holiday picnic without some festive lights? (But more on that later.)

Don’t Be Afraid to Overpack

The holidays are not the time for a light snack.

When planning a seasonal picnic, make sure you don’t skimp on the food! Some deliciously festive treats you can pack for this outing may include:

  • A charcuterie board
  • Chips and dip
  • Pumpkin pie
  • Holiday beverages (eggnog, anyone?)

With a holiday picnic, you may be bringing more perishables than usual. Invest in a quality cooler bag to make transporting these tasty treats easier!

Decorate, Decorate, Decorate!

Put the holiday in “holiday picnic” by getting your decorating on!

Adding decorations to an outdoor space can be a bit more challenging, so you’ll need to get creative with this step. Some easy ways to add a festive flair to your picnic spot include:

  • Light it up – Pick up some battery-powered lights to provide a little glow on-the-go. String your lights along a nearby tree or wrap them around an umbrella if you’re headed to the beach.
  • Use a portable table – If you really want to step up your picnic game, pick up a lightweight, portable table. This will give your outing a classier feel and provide space for holiday table settings (note to self: add “holiday table settings” to decoration list).
  • Make an eye-catching centerpiece – Use some poinsettias, candles, or holly to create a beautiful centerpiece that’s unmistakably holiday-themed!

Bring the Holidays Outdoors

Who says all your gatherings have to be inside?

If the weather permits, bring your seasonal celebrations outdoors this year. Not only is it safer, but a picnic is the perfect way to spice up your usual traditions—after all, who likes having the same holiday dinner every single year?

By using these creative tips and tricks, your magical picnic will make the perfect gift for the whole family. Good luck, and happy holidays!
