Initially, the project had the name VGD (Voiture à Grande Diffusion) - "Big Mass Car", but later the name was changed to DS. As a result, the designer produced a car without a radiator grille, but with a rounded nose, narrowing to a tail and fantastic for those years coefficient of drag Cx = 0.382. True, the first sketches had to be abandoned: in order to place the carburetor engine, it was necessary to slightly increase the height of the all-aluminum hood. To this day, this part of the car is one of the largest parts made of aluminum alloys created in world practice.
