Teaching your tween to be responsible is an important task that every parent must learn. There is a lot that you will have to learn and do as your child gets older.
Helping them to be responsible now, is the best way to ensure that they will have critical thinking skills to manage whatever life throws at them.
Decide On Chores
One of the most effective ways to develop responsibility is to give tweens chores to do. Having to do household chores will teach them how to be dependable. There is a wide selection of chores you can choose to give your tween to do.
You can have them do laundry so that they can wash their tween clothing. Washing the dishes is also another great chore that you can give your tween to do. All of this teaches them discipline and also teaches them to be helpful to others.
Create Consequences
Having consequences for their behavior is critical when you are dealing with a tween. You need to lay out the ground rules ahead of time so that they are aware of the punishments that they will get for disobedience.
You can even make it a democratic process by discussing with them specific behavior and then coming to a decision together about the consequences they will face for it.
Getting them involved in the process is a great way to make sure that they fully understand the consequences of their actions and try their best to avoid them.
Reward Triumphs
It is important that while teaching your tween to be responsible, you take the time to praise them whenever they get it right. Doing the right thing should always be a given and you do want them to learn that.
However, there are times when you must acknowledge their efforts especially when they go above and beyond. This will encourage them to take the initiative to be more responsible and help them have healthier teen years.
Consider Community Involvement
Community involvement is something that you need to consider for your tween. It is a great way for your kids to learn that what they do can have a positive impact on the wider community.
Even if they only do voluntary work once per month it is a valuable way for them to learn to help others beyond their family circle. This is a great way of instilling in your child the fact that they can help to make the world a better place.
Start the Journey
The journey towards being a responsible adult has many twists and turns for tweens. However, as long as you lay the right foundation there is more than a good chance that you will raise responsible kids. The kids will be ready to make a positive contribution to the world.
