Disclosure: I received passes to see Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves at AMC Elmwood Palace 20 Movie Theater here in New Orleans. I was
not obliged to write a blog post, but wanted to share several things
about the movie that really impressed me. All opinions in this blog
post are
100% my own and honest.
PR Invite: I attended an advanced screening of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023) this past Saturday. This movie hits theaters March 31st. To give you a little historical background, Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy, role playing, table-top game that was first introduced in 1974. I was born in 1972, so I was two years old at the time. HaHaHa So I can imagine how some of my readers feel, who are a lot younger than me. The Dungeons & Dragons game has since been published by Wizards of the Coast (a subsidiary of Hasbro) since 1997. Did you know that?
As a child, I never got into Dungeons & Dragons. I didn't even try (it seemed to have a lot of stuff involved and a lot of males played the game). I remember my childhood best friend's brother and his friend (who were much older than us) playing and talking about the game. It's a game of intellect, knowledge and skill. I was very smart, but it seemed like more mature individuals played this game. I became a huge Star Wars fan and followed that franchise faithfully.
When this movie opportunity presented itself, curiosity got the best of me. I said, I am going. Do you know there have been three (3) Dungeon & Dragon movies prior to this one? (source). There was Dungeons & Dragons (2000), Dungeons & Dragon: Wrath of the Dragon God (2005) and Dungeons & Dragons: The Book of Vile Darkness (2012). How did I miss all of these? Maybe I was into Harry Potter. I hope Prime Video has them to watch. I need to catch up.
These events are so much fun. You meet some really cool people. Many of the attendees were really into Dungeons & Dragons. They knew its history. I grabbed some popcorn, a drink and couldn't wait for the movie to begin.
Attendees got to take pictures with the official poster (mine not pictured) and win Amazon gift cards.
This movie had some really strong and smart female leads. Yaaay! You are going to find yourself cheering for Michelle Rodriguez (Holga Kilgore) and Sophia Lillis (Doric). These characters face sexism, male egoism and a host of other negative behavior from male characters in the movie. They don't stand for it. They don't compromise. They stand up to those issues and conquer them, yet maintaining their femininity. I applaud the writers for not making them victims.
What will you get out of this movie?
There are many thrills. This movie doesn't lack in showcasing a wonderful assortment of dragons (each with its own tactics) to keep you jumping in your seat. There will be tears followed by tears of joy in the movie, that will make you think about the important things in life. This movie is also filled with a lot of life lessons (if you're paying attention). Let me share some with you and give you a heads up for what to look for (in all of the characters):
1. Throughout life, you will come across good people, bad people and people disguised as good.
2. We all have strengths and weaknesses.
3. Sometimes we're our own worst enemy.
4. We're a lot stronger than we give ourselves credit.
5. Your gift is within you. Believe in yourself. Cultivate your gift.
I went into this movie with a clean slate. I had no expectations. I got a lot out of it. I like when that happens. The same thing occurred when I saw The Lion King musical. It's a really good feeling when you get something out of an experience. Is this movie perfect? No. I thought there were some unnecessary lull moments (dragged on) that could've been cut out of the 2 hour and 20 minute production. However, the majority of it was both entertaining and heartfelt.
