Bursting with culture, epic scenery and incredible food, it’s no wonder that Southeast Asia is still growing in popularity. Not only is it incredibly easy to navigate, but this corner of Asia is remarkably affordable for travellers, meaning that you can enjoy a really high quality of life without the hefty price tag.
But where to start? Each country in this Eastern bloc has its own unique personality and ancient traditions that visitors can’t get enough of. The best thing is that they are so close together, only separated by a border, that you can drift around the whole area without much trouble. So, prepare for an adventure packed with sensory overload and excitement; Southeast Asia is calling.

Thailand
By far the most popular destination in southeastern Asia, Thailand is synonymous with picturesque white beaches, stunning temples and a party-hard culture. Landing in Bangkok might come as somewhat of a shock for travellers coming from the West. The craze of food vendors, tuk-tuks and motorbikes can be overwhelming, but you’ll soon fall in love with its hectic soul.
Of course, Thailand has been plagued with mass tourism for some time, but it’s easy to avoid as long as you know where to go. Go off the beaten track and steer clear of Khaosan Road if you’re looking for a bit of peace and quiet! The further north you head, the quieter and more rural it gets.
Vietnam
Nothing quite beats a Vietnam tour. A country famous for its often-tortured history, as well as its beautiful lagoons, French influence and world-famous caves, there’s something for everyone here. Head to Ho Chi Minh to learn more about the country’s history before heading up north to Hoi An and Hanoi for a more European vibe.
The best thing about Vietnam is the ease with which you can get around. Its long and thin shape means that most people travel from north to south and vice versa, making decision-making very easy indeed. And if you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the mountains and rice terraces of the far north are just waiting to be discovered.
Laos
Often regarded as the sleepy neighbour of Vietnam and Thailand, Laos offers a slower pace of life which is, frankly, a godsend after spending a big bulk of time in the other southeastern countries. It does, however, boast plenty of unspoiled countryside, ancient villages and riverside communities that give visitors an authentic taste of the country.
Tourism is yet to compromise Laos’ old soul. Make the most of the peace by trying your hand at caving, rock climbing and kayaking.
Philippines
Made up of thousands of islands that are just waiting to be discovered, the Philippines is a tropical paradise that is comprised of spotless white beaches and swaying palm trees. Discover hidden lagoons, backflip into secluded lakes and take a kayak from one island to another. The Philippines is made for water babies and anyone who wants the sun, sea and sand as their constant companions.
